LUCID DREAM IN WHICH I CONTEMPLATE THE NAZCA LINES

By S. N. Rodriguez

i’m either dead or dreaming / maybe death is dreaming / we’ll all find out eventually / right now

i’m lying naked / in the feather grass beneath / green canopies and i feel alive / white-capped

wisps / a velvet zephyr / the smell of earth /

a dry leaf crumples underfoot / you look down at me and i / see you’re naked too / i know

i’m dreaming / because i don’t / run / the crumpled leaf unfurls itself / we smile / i’m not

ashamed / and neither are you /

i know i’m dreaming / because i don’t / hide my body / in this dream i’m not afraid / you aren’t a

stranger / i simply haven’t met you yet / do i look like a condor? / i stretch my arms out / like

great wings /

i know i’m dreaming / because i don’t / feel vulnerable / let’s pretend we’re geoglyphs /

you lay beside me and let the / tall grasses trace your outline / above us light spins a

cotton / candy sky and we pluck pink / and blue tufts with our fingers /

we let them dissolve in our mouths / do you know about the nazca lines? / here let me show you /

i ask an oak for a branch / and it shakes its crown / thank you friend / i trace patterns in the sand /

a tree / a lizard / a whale / a person waving hello /

why these furrows? / who were they for? / what do they mean? / maybe the ancients

knew / that our existence in this / universe is a miracle / maybe the ancients just / wanted

to give the stars / something to look at
